Welcome to the Portuguese Program in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese.

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Maryland features dynamic courses on the languages and cultures of the Portuguese speaking countries.

We offer elementary to advanced level Portuguese language, and classes on the culture, cinema, and literature of the Lusophone countries. Our courses provide essential linguistic and critical thinking skills necessary to navigate a globalized and culturally diverse world. Students in our program enjoy consistent interaction and support from faculty. We are committed to a rigorous linguistic and cultural education to help our students advance academically and professionally.

Your Portuguese minor advisor is available to go over coursework and requirements, discuss how to bridge your minor with your academic and professional interests and design an academic plan for you to graduate on time.

Degree Program Requirements

The Minor consists of 15 credits of coursework beyond the prerequisite courses (PORT 103 and PORT 203). Students complete intermediate to advanced immersive language courses that prepare them to communicate, understand, read and write in Portuguese. In addition, students also complete coursework focused on several aspects of the culture, literature, and cinema of the Portuguese Speaking countries. The interdisciplinary nature of our Minor allows students to explore their interests while deepening their capacity to communicate across cultures. 

Beyond the Classroom

Luso-Brazilian Students Association

The Luso-Brazilian Student Association is a group of undergraduates, graduates and scholars interested in learning and promoting the cultures of Portuguese-speaking world.  It brings together Portuguese language learners, Heritage speakers, visiting scholars as well as those who enjoy learning about other cultures and languages. Students involved in the LBSA have an opportunity to exercise leadership and engage in campus life through the organization of cultural, scholarly and social events. All are welcome!
