The Language Flagship is a national effort to change the way Americans learn languages. The School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (SLLC) in UMD's College of Arts and Humanities (ARHU) offers flagship programs in Arabic and Persian.

We are proud to be one of only seven Arabic Flagships in the nation. Our mission is to create the next generation of global professionals who speak Arabic at a professional level and possess deep knowledge about the many cultures of the modern Middle East. Our Arabic program at UMD is hosted in a high-quality university that offers many areas of study, and we have created a strong and vibrant community for Arabic learning.
Special Programs in Persian
As the only Persian Flagship Program in the United States, the University of Maryland's Undergraduate Persian Flagship offers a state of the art language curriculum that aims to educate global professionals with superior command of Persian and a deep understanding of the life and cultures of the Persian-speaking countries of Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

About the Language Flagship
The Language Flagship is a national effort to change the way Americans learn languages. Flagship offers language programs at schools across the United States for undergraduate students in critical languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, Swahili, Turkish, and Urdu. Designed as a network of programs, The Language Flagship seeks to graduate students who will take their place among the next generation of global professionals, commanding a superior level of proficiency in one of many languages critical to U.S. competitiveness and security.

Beyond the Classroom
Language Partner Program
The Language Partner Program (LPP) offers majors in any SLLC program at UMD the opportunity to meet with international students outside the classroom and practice their target language in an informal yet structured way. For international students, the LPP provides a forum for connecting with U.S. students and integrating into the UMD campus.Language Partner Program
Students complete their Capstone Year here at the University of Maryland during their fourth or fifth year of studies. This intensive year of Persian is designed so Advanced speakers of Persian can attain Superior level (3 on ILR scale) proficiency.Learn more about the Persian Captstone year
