Apply to the Summer Language Institute

Application Information

The UMD Summer Language Institute Application for Summer 2024 is now open!

Please review the below information and then apply at this link. To access the application you will need to log in on the top righthand corner of that page, using your UMD Directory ID and password.

Applicants not currently enrolled at the University of Maryland must send an email to umdsi@umd.edu with student name and preferred email address to be granted access to the system.

UMD students will use their Directory ID and password to sign in to the online application system.

Payment for the Summer Institute follows the deadlines set forth by the University, which can be found on the Payment Policy and Due Dates page.

In addition to the Summer Language Institute application, non-UMD students will need to complete a Visiting Student Application through the Office of Extended Studies. Please note that since SLI courses are undergraduate credits, applicants should complete the Undergraduate Visiting Student Application.

Rising highschool seniors attending the SLI will need to complete the UMD Concurrent Enrollment application instead of the Visiting Student Application (see below)

Application Deadlines

Early Bird Deadline - Apply by March 20th, 2024 to receive $200 off the cost of attendance

Priority Deadline - Apply by April 12th, 2024 to be eligible for scholarships through the SLI

The final deadline for UMD students to apply to the Summer Language Institute is May 15th, 2024. 

SLI Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, with the first reviews taking place following the Early Bird Deadline. If you need notification of your status in the program earlier than this for any reason, please let us know via email at umdsi@umd.edu 

Students who are not attending UMD during the academic year are required to submit an additional visiting student application. For these deadlines, see below.


In addition to the Summer Language Institute application, all non-UMD students will need to complete a Visiting Student Application through the Office of Extended Studies. Please note that since SLI courses are undergraduate credits, applicants should complete the Undergraduate Visiting Student Application.

The deadline to complete the Visiting Student Application is May 15, 2024 (domestic students) and April 15, 2024 (international students).

Rising high school seniors who wish to participate in the Summer Language Institute must submit an application for Concurrent Enrollment. The deadline to submit this application for the summer is May 1, 2024.

Reference Form

The Summer Language Institute application requires that a professional or academic reference submit a Summer Institute Reference Form on your behalf. Please provide contact information for your academic or professional reference on your Summer Language Institute application. After you have submitted your entire application, the online application system will automatically send an email with the form and further instructions to your recommender.

Please note that you are responsible for ensuring that your recommender submits the form to the Summer Language Institute in a timely manner.

Complete academic transcripts

All applicants must provide copies of their transcripts on the online application. The Summer Language Institute application provides up to five spaces where you can upload copies of your transcripts.  An unofficial transcript is suitable for the online application.

Summer Term Visiting Student Application (FOR NON-UMD STUDENTS ONLY)

All non-UMD students will need to complete the Summer Term Undergraduate Visiting Student Application. Please view the Summer Undergraduate Visiting Student Application, which will be available beginning February 21st. This application must be completed by May 15th if you are a domestic student, and by April 15th if you are an international student. Please note that all classes offered at the Summer Institute are Undergraduate courses, and therefore require the Summer Session Undergraduate Application.

Undergraduate Admission's Concurrent Student Application (high school students only)

If you are a high school student who will not graduate before the beginning of the summer term, please contact us regarding the Concurrent Student Application. Please note that the terms of Concurrent Enrollment state that all high school students must live within commuting distance of College Park, MD.  Exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis.
 

Level Placement

All non-UMD applicants (except for true beginners) will be placed pending assessment. This proficiency assessment will take place after students are admitted to the program, but if you are concerned you may be too advanced for the highest level course you should contact us at umdsi@umd.edu. Please also note that all summer classes are contingent on meeting minimum student enrollments.
