The Department of Spanish and Portuguese is a place where people can explore new languages, literatures and cultures, question traditions and norms across borders and investigate the diversity of human experience.

We encourage curiosity, creativity and critical thinking both inside and outside of our classrooms. Events sponsored by our department, such as a variety of conferences and the Juan Ramón Jiménez Distinguished Lectures and Seminars Series, present opportunities for our students and the public to engage with writers and scholars from all over the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world on diverse topics and contemporary issues. Our graduates’ critical thinking and innovative research translate into cutting-edge ideas and excellent problem solving skills to make significant contributions in a wide variety of fields including, but not limited to, education, translation, public service and business.

The generous support of alumni and friends makes these opportunities possible. Give today to fund real-world experiences, both local and global, and support pioneering research across disciplines that will confront the most difficult questions and problems that we face in today’s ever-changing world. Together we can make a difference!
