Arabic Summer Language Institute

The Arabic Language Summer Institute implements an innovative language curriculum that focuses on real communication skills.

Our language and content-based courses create a rich learning environment that simulates immersion while on campus. Students are effectively immersed in an Arabic-speaking environment during their time at Maryland, with approximately seven hours a day of structured language-learning experiences.

Students also gain language exposure with individual and small group language partner hours with high level Arabic speakers.

The average student attending will have made a serious, long-term commitment to learning Arabic, will be prepared to study intensively for nine weeks, and be performing well academically at his or her home institution.

Curriculum and Classes

The Summer Institute will run in two sessions, and students may apply to one or both sessions.  (Preference for admission will be given to students who are applying for the entire nine week summer program).

Summer 2021 Program Dates: June 1 - July 30, 2021
Session 1: June 1 - July 2, 2021
Session 2: July 6 - July 30, 2021

Students will participate daily in core classes, which will focus on principle language instruction: reading, writing, listening, and speaking, as well as afternoon courses with a specialized focus on culture, politics, media, etc.  Our small class sizes (~15 or less) and use of materials developed specifically for an intensive environment will allow attendees to complete a full academic year (12 academic credits) of language study across all areas of language learning.

Cultural Activities

The intensive model of the UMD Summer Institute aims to create an environment where students are immersed in the language and culture of their target program full time. Beyond their classes, students will participate in a wide array of integrated cultural activities throughout the week: film screenings, lectures and activities in Arabic and Persian, and a workshop and lecture series focusing on the intricacies of language learning and future opportunities for critical language learners.

Additionally, students will enjoy field trips, culturally relevant celebrations, and meals, in addition to time with language partners. This will give them the opportunity to actively use their new skills as well as become culturally competent in the languages they seek to learn.

Summer 2021 Note: Despite the Summer Language Institute being online for Summer 2021, students will still participate in lectures, workshops, clubs, and other activities virtually to develop cultural competence.
