Scholarships

SLLC annually awards scholarships to language majors or minors. Applications are due February 5, 2024.

SLLC Scholarships

Dr. Anna Bartsch-Dunne Language House Scholarship (3 awards of $2,500)

The purpose of this award is to provide annual need-based scholarships for students from the Metropolitan Washington, DC area accepted into Language House.

Eligibility

  • Current or admitted Language House Program participants
  • Originally from the Metropolitan Washington DC and Baltimore County area(Northern Virginia, DC, Prince George’s, Montgomery, Howard counties, in Maryland

Valerie Van Mach Choudhury Endowed Scholarship for Romance Languages (1 award of $1500)

Established in 2015 to support merit-based scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students majoring in French, Italian, Spanish or Romance Languages.

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate Majors in French, Italian, Spanish, or Romance Languages
  • Minimum GPA of 3.2

Donald Hirsch Scholarship (2 awards of $350)

Established in December 2000 to support scholarships for students studying foreign language who have a long-term vocational desire to apply their language skills to a field such as architecture, law, business, translation, public policy, or government service.

Eligibility

  • Majors in French, German, and Japanese
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5

David N. & Mary Magruder Foreign Language Scholarship (1 award of $800)

A merit-based scholarship for undergraduate and graduate SLLC students who graduated from a public high school in Maryland.  

Number of Awards:

  • 1 award of $800

Eligibility

  • Undergraduate language major in SLLC
  • Graduated from a public high school in Maryland
  • Minimum GPA 3.0
  • Priority to students from high schools in Washington, Garrett, or Allegany counties.
  • Priority to previous recipients (for up to eight semesters)

Languages Scholarship Fund (1 award of $300)

A merit-based scholarship for undergraduate SLLC students.

Number of Awards:

  • 1 award of $300

  • Ulrike and Jamshid Amouzegar Undergraduate Scholarship in Persian Studies
  • The Persian Studies Essay Award
  • Persian Flagship scholarship : Up to $20,000 for intensive summer study ($5,000) and the Persian Flagship Simulated Immersion Capstone year ($15,000) on campus.
  • UMD Summer Language Institute Scholarship : Up to $1,500 for intensive summer study of Persian at the UMD Summer Language Institute.
  • Critical Language Scholarships for overseas summer study of Persian in Tajikistan.
  • Gilman Scholarship for overseas summer study of Persian in Tajikistan.

Russian

  • The Maya Brin Scholarship in Cultural Competency (multiple awards each year, variable, usually a minimum of $5,000 each)
  • The Maya Brin Price for Excellence in the Study of Russian Award ($500)

Spanish

ARHU Scholarships

The college offers several scholarships to its students. Each scholarship has eligibility criteria. Scholarship information and applications are made available each spring semester. Applications are available in 1120 Francis Scott Key Hall. Annual scholarship deadlines are the last day of March of any given year, unless otherwise noted.

Erik B. Young, M.D. International Travel-Study Awards

Alumnus Dr. Erik B. Young wishes to support international travel-study for a group of University of Maryland College Park undergraduates each year. There will be five (5) International Travel-Study Abroad Awards with stipends of $2,500 each awarded for the year. The application process will open in early spring each year.
