Japanese Kinema Series: Paprika, dir. Kon Satoshi

Japanese | School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Thursday, November 10, 2022 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm St Mary’s Hall, Multipurpose Room

We are pleased to announce new programming in the Japanese program: the Japanese Kinema Series.

The term "kinema" has a cool, retro feel. It was introduced and widely used from the 1920s to refer to what were then called "moving pictures" (活動写真). Magazines titles and theater names used this term for decades before the term eiga (映画) became more commonly used.

Please join us for two film showings this semester. The first reveals the experiences of a motley family trying to get by in an economically depressed Japan. By the award-winning and internationally-recognized director, Kore'eda Hirokazu, Shoplifters, shines a critical light on the idea of family ties. The anime Paprika, on the other hand, is a visual delight and mind-bender. Created by the great storyteller, Kon Satoshi, whose premature death in 2010 left fans despondent, this work asks viewers to question our assumptions about science, technology, and reality.
