SLLC Celebrates Maryland Day 2025

Maryland Day was filled with cultural events and international performances.

By Lauren Hargrave

The School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures (SLLC) and Language House participated in Maryland Day on April 26, 2025. SLLC hosted a wide variety of activities throughout the day with performance highlights including a lion dance, flamenco, capoeira and a K-pop inspired dance.

In addition to the international performances, SLLC held the third annual great book giveaway in Jimenez Hall, with a wide array of books in different languages available for free. The Chinese program hosted a Chinese calligraphy and lantern painting workshop, teaching participants the basics from technique to design. Outside of Jimenez Hall was a sharing hope wall, where everyone was encouraged to write inspirational words in world languages. The world under one tent featured the opportunity to get henna designs, make crafts, try international candies, participate in trivia and games, and learn more about languages and cultures from around the world.

A meet-and-greet event was held for prospective students, offering them the chance to connect with current students and faculty. Attendees explored opportunities in language study and listened to students share their experiences both on campus and abroad during an engaging student panel.

A special thank you to all the volunteers that helped make this day a success!
