Romance Languages Alum Stakes Roots in France

Mariah Stewart ’19 embarks on a career abroad after completing the Maryland-in-Nice program.

Mariah Stewart ’19 graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Romance languages. Before attending UMD, she developed an interest in studying new languages, particularly French. Initially a French and communication double major, her newfound passion for Italian inspired her to fully immerse herself in language learning, so she switched her major to Romance languages with a focus on French and Italian.

“When I took an Italian class, I felt a closer interest in the language,” Stewart said. “My Italian professor, Margherita Morando, was amazing, warm and welcoming, which made me want to study Italian.”

Stewart’s journey led her to the Maryland-in-Nice program, where she immersed herself in French language and culture. During her time in Nice, she fell in love with the environment and made herself at home.

“I was treated like a regular student while I studied in Nice,” she said. “I was scared at first, but I took theater classes to make myself feel more comfortable. As I settled in, I realized I had found my home away from home.”

After returning to Maryland, Stewart was determined to follow her passion back to Nice. In 2020, she became the first American to pursue a master’s degree in international affairs, French-Italian relations, at Côte d'Azur University. After earning her master’s in 2022, she decided to stay in Nice permanently and obtained a work visa. Stewart now works as a study abroad office advisor for EDHEC Business School. She chose this career path to help students follow in her study abroad footsteps, acting as a mentor and assisting students with their exchange applications.

Reflecting on her journey, Stewart said she feels proud despite her initial fears. “Transitions are hard. It’s okay if things feel difficult, but at the same time, you just have to take a leap of faith,” she said. “From my experience, I've learned how important it is to face your fears. If you really want something, go for it. It is worth it.”
