Maryland Hispanic Applied Linguistics Conference

Welcome to the Maryland Hispanic Applied Linguistics Conference! Join us for two days of engaging keynote talks, presentations, digital posters, and networking as we connect students, academics, researchers, and practitioners to share the latest developments in the field.  The theme of MHALC 2024 is "Diverse Voices, Shared Contexts in Hispanic Applied Linguistics." 

MHALC is organized by students and faculty in the Hispanic Applied Linguistics master’s degree program at the University of Maryland. This virtual symposium offers undergraduate students the unique opportunity to present their course papers on any aspect of Hispanic applied linguistics in a formal academic setting to an audience of experts and peers. 

Join us, present your research, and learn more about the exciting undergraduate work being conducted by other students with an interest in Hispanic Applied Linguistics. 

MHALC 2024

Conference Theme

The theme of MHALC 2024 is "Diverse Voices, Shared Contexts in Hispanic Applied Linguistics." It refers to the rich linguistic and cultural diversity within the Hispanic world, as well as to the different methodological approaches and disciplinary perspectives within applied linguistics that we employ to research, understand, and embrace this diversity.

MHALC 2024 will take place April 5 - 6, 2024 online and in person at the University of Maryland, College Park campus.

  • April 5th will be a fully online day with academic presentations by students and faculty as well as institutional presentations.
  • April 6th will be a hybrid day, with in-person presentations by guest speakers also streamed online for registered participants.

Registration is free but required for all participants and presenters after notification of acceptance.

Call for Papers

We invite students with an interest in Hispanic Applied Linguistics to present papers in Spanish and/or English that reflect original and innovative undergraduate research in any branch of Hispanic applied linguistics, including but not limited to:

  • Second language teaching and learning

  • Heritage language maintenance

  • Discourse analysis

  • Multimodality

  • Sociolinguistics

  • Bilingualism and multilingualism 

  • Language planning and policy

  • Humor and irony

  • Translation and interpretation

We welcome submissions from undergraduate students regardless of their major or current university for 

  • Presentations (15 minutes plus 10 minutes for Q&A)

  • Digital posters (5 minutes plus 10 for Q&A)
