Our Bodies Ourselves Translation Project
Translation Project: Our Bodies Ourselves (OBOS)
- Why can’t I love the body I see in the mirror? Why do I think “I’m fat,” “I’m ugly,” “my nose is too big”?
- How do I choose a method of birth control? What are the risks, benefits, and side effects of each method?
- What are Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) and how do I practice safe sex?
- What’s the best way to detect Breast Cancer Early? Does self Examination work?
- Should I worry about my bone density and take drugs for that?
- Is Hormonal Therapy a viable option for women like me who are approaching menopause?
These are just a few of the questions women ask about their health. Knowing the answers to some of these questions is sometimes a matter of life and death. How do women find the information they need without the influence of drug companies, professional societies, advertisers, and religious authorities?
Our Bodies Ourselves (OBOS) is a nonprofit, public interest organization based in Cambridge, Mass., that develops and promotes evidence-based information on girls’ and women’s reproductive health and sexuality.
OBOS’s landmark publication, Our Bodies, Ourselves has sold millions of copies around the world and has been translated into more than two dozen languages. The most recent U.S. edition, published in 2011, was named by Library Journal as one of the best consumer health books of that year.
It is with great pleasure that we are announcing the Persian adaptation and translation of OBOS, a project long in the making. The department of Women’s Studies and Roshan Institute for Persian Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park, have come together to make this project possible.
The Persian adaptation of Our Bodies, Ourselves will be a digital interactive project hosted by the UMD website. It will include excerpted translations of the English edition with commentary and articles written by healthcare professionals inside Iran. It will also provide a forum for health care givers and health care receivers inside Iran to start a conversation about pressing issues concerning women’s health in Iran.
The initial phase of the project is estimated at $48,000. We’re asking for donations of $100 or more from individuals and institutions. All donations will be acknowledged on the website.
We’ll be happy to answer any questions, receive comments or suggestions about the project.
