Talk with Visiting Professor Luiza Larangeira da Silva Mello

College of Arts and Humanities | School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures | Spanish and Portuguese Thursday, October 23, 2025 2:00 pm - 3:15 pm Jimenez Hall, Lauretta Clough Community Room JMZ1205

In the famous essay “The Death of the Author”, Roland Barthes announces the demise of the author—a “modern figure” who, despite having reigned supreme in literature, theory and criticism since at least the 18th century, had his death proclaimed by Mallarmé, Proust, Surrealism, linguistics, and… Barthes himself. The aim of this presentation is to reflect on how over the past three decades, literary works with a clear testimonial, confessional, and autobiographical vocation have emerged, seeking to resurrect the figure of the author in their identity-based relationship with the writer as a person.
