How have history and collective memory shifted since the collapse of the Soviet “grand narrative” of progress toward a bright future? How have access to historical archives and the revelations of Soviet crimes intersected with the myth of a “glorious past” in the collective memory of Vladimir Putin’s Russia? This roundtable will consider how popular culture, mass media, and social institutions have shaped and continue to shape widely shared visions of history, public discourse, and politics—looking both backward, to the Russian Revolutions and Soviet history, and forward, to the upcoming 2018 elections.
