One Stage, Many Languages: A Contemporary Global Theatre Festival
One Stage, Many Languages: A Contemporary Global Theatre Festival
One Stage, Many Languages is a collaboration among the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, the Language House, and the Department of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies at the University of Maryland dedicated to celebrating linguistic and cultural diversity through theater. By featuring short plays, scenes and monologues from contemporary world theater in their original languages — with students performing, translating and contextualizing each piece — the festival bridges academic learning and artistic practice.
The festival includes performances in five languages — French, German, Japanese, Persian and Spanish — featuring students from SLLC with the support of TDPS graduate students serving as lead dramaturgs and directors. In addition to the staged readings, a public lobby display will showcase students’ research, translations and creative reflections, allowing them to share their classroom learning with peers and the broader UMD community.
All members of the campus community are invited to join the performances and reception that follow. Performances are short, dynamic and accessible through English summaries or projected subtitles.
