German Studies Department Film Series : Ausgsting

Cinema and Media Studies | College of Arts and Humanities | German Studies | Language House | School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Wednesday, October 28, 2026 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm St. Mary’s Hall, Patio - Outdoor Screening

The 2026-27 German Studies Department Film Series will screen six German films, including both nonfiction films and features, that present stories of German cinema on the Move. 

Whether crossing borders, navigating open waters, driving iconic vehicles, or venturing into deep space, the 2026/27 film series explores the rich cinematic history of movement, displacement, and journeys in German film. Spanning classics from the former East Germany (GDR) to contemporary releases, these films capture characters physically in motion while wrestling with freedom, home, identity, and human connection.  

Fall Semester

  • Stroszek (1977) – dir. Werner Herzog | Sept 16 | JMZ 1205 
    An ex-con, an elderly man, and a prostitute escape the harsh streets of Berlin for rural Wisconsin. Seeking a fresh start in the American heartland, their pursuit of the American Dream slowly unravels into surreal tragedy, absurdity, and profound isolation.
     
  • Ausgsteckt (2025) – dir. Julian Wittmann | Oct 28 | St. Mary's Hall Patio (Outdoor Screening)
    Trading mainland routines for life on open waters, this contemporary film explores the allure and challenges of an alternative existence off the grid, capturing the spirit of modern escapism.
     
  • Eolomea (1972) – dir. Hermann Zschoche | Dec 3 | St. Mary's Hall Multipurpose Room
    A standout classic of East German sci-fi. When eight cargo ships mysteriously vanish near a remote space station, cosmonauts push beyond Earth's boundaries to uncover a secret expedition heading toward the distant Eolomea constellation.

Spring Semester

  • 303 (2018) – dir. Hans Weingartner | Feb 10 | JMZ 1205
    Two university students driving across Western Europe in an old Mercedes camper van strike up deep conversations on human nature, love, and politics, transforming a long highway trek into an intimate journey of self-discovery.
     
  • Ojczyzna / Fatherland (2026) – dir. Paweł Pawlikowski | March 3 | JMZ 1205
    A powerful cross-border narrative bridging Germany and Poland, following characters as they navigate personal history, cultural identity, and the heavy legacy of shared European memory.
     
  • Go Trabi Go (1991) – dir. Peter Timm | April 28 | JMZ 1205
    In the wake of German reunification, a spirited family from Saxony packs up their tiny Trabant for a hilarious, obstacle-filled road trip to Italy, offering a lighthearted classic on post-Wende mobility.

Free food at 6:30pm, film at 7pm

All films have English subtitles
