Language Chats
The Language Chats provide opportunities for the UMD community to meet with speakers of multiple languages in a casual setting. Students, faculty, and staff can meet others who want to share or brush up on their language skills in the comfy lounge at St. Mary's Hall.
Language House Chats
The Language House is a multicultural living-learning community in which residents work together to develop fluency in a target language and an appreciation of the historical, geographical, and sociological worlds of the target culture(s). As part of its mission, the Language House seeks to engage the larger community of language learners on campus.
The Language Chats are a key part of the Language House's mission to foster a multilingual, multicultural, and inclusive environment and to support language learners across the campus community. Every Monday during the fall and spring semesters, we open the doors of St. Mary's Hall from 4:00-5:30 PM to welcome anyone who wants to share their language or practice any language that they are learning or have learned in a casual setting over coffee and snacks. Tables are set up in our Multipurpose Room and Lounge for each language, and participants are welcome to move between language tables at any time. The Chats are open to everyone in the campus community who wishes to come practice, improve, or maintain their language skills.
The language tables that are available on a regular basis are Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. However, if you would like to practice a language that is not listed here, let us know at languagehouse@umd.edu!
We also strive to connect with other programs on campus, like the Language Partner Program and International Student and Scholar Services.
