Screening of Asmarina

Cinema and Media Studies | College of Arts and Humanities | Italian | School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures Monday, December 5, 2022 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm St Mary’s Hall, Multipurpose Room

Asmarina is a documentary film about the Habesha (Eritrean and Ethiopian) community in Milan that bridges the present life of this community to the historical legacies of Italian colonialism in the Horn of Africa. The film makers’ approach to the Habesha life is not as outsiders but rather, as involved and invested members of this community.

The Eritrean/Ethiopian community has been present in Italy for at least half a century and it has been actively integrated into the social and cultural life of the city. Starting from the collective memories of the community, on the ground of photo documents, the film gathers together the legacy of personal stories, exploring the different shades of identity, migration and the aspirations of the people.

Followed by a student-led Q&A and discussion that will attempt to unpack historical and contemporary accounts of the experience of Eritreans and Ethiopians in Milan.

The event takes place on campus on Monday, December 5 at 4pm in the Multipurpose Room of the Language House in St. Mary's Hall.
