Mei Mingxue Nan

Mei Mingxue Nan is an Assistant Professor of Chinese and Cinema/Media Studies at the University of Maryland, College Park. She received her PhD in Comparative Literature from Harvard University in 2026. Her research brings together East Asian studies, film and media studies, and the environmental humanities. She studies how media bring large-scale technologies and complex political histories into everyday life.

Her current book project examines how nuclear modernity has been mediated across Mao-era China, postwar Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea. It asks how nuclear technology became intimate or distant, ordinary or catastrophic, and how its benefits and burdens were unevenly distributed. The project draws on materials ranging from household objects and documentary film to television, nuclear-waste sites, and installation art.
