The Department of French and Italian was out in full swing at this year's annual Haitian Studies Association conference, co-sponsored by the University of Maryland, College Park, George Washington University and Howard University, which took place Oct 6-9 in Washington, D.C.

On Thursday, Oct 6, the SLLC Language House and the departments of French and Italian and Cinema hosted the screening of the documentary film "Deported", followed by a discussion between Professor Cécile Accilien (Kennesaw State University), Professor Valerie K. Orlando (FRIT, SLLC, UMD) and SLLC PhD student Ligia Neryanna Gonzalez. The discussion portion of this extremely well attended event was recorded, with the generous help of SLLC staff and graduate students, and will be available for streaming on the YouTube channel of the Haitian Studies Association very soon.

On Saturday, Oct 8, SLLC MA student Michaëlle Vilmont was honored by the Haitian Studies Association as one of this year's Emerging Scholars. She also presented her research at a panel discussion that morning moderated by Professor Maria Beliaeva Solomon (FRIT, SLLC, UMD) in front of an enthusiastic attendance, which included her graduate advisor Professor Orlando and her mentor and UMD, FRIT alumna Professor Cae Joseph Masséna (U of Miami).
