The Maya Brin program brings leading Russian cultural figures to the University of Maryland for short term stays.

Liudmila Novikova is associate professor of history at the Higher School of Economics (HSE) in Moscow, Russia.  A specialist in the Russian civil war, she is the author of An Anti-Bolshevik Alternative: The White Movement and the Civil War in the Russian North (Madison, WI, 2018). She has also published numerous articles and book chapters in English, French, German, Italian, and Russian on the civil war and other topics.  More recently, she has begun working on World War II and the Soviet home front, particularly the issues of everyday life and intimate relationships between Soviet women and Allied soldiers.

The Maya Brin program brings leading Russian cultural figures to the University of Maryland for short term stays. As this year's Maya Brin resident, Dr. Novikova will be visiting classes and meeting with students and faculty from April 10-21.  The centerpiece of her residency will be a major international conference on the civil war on April 21, 2023.
