Roshan Institute for Persian Studies will host a viewing of a performance "The Woman I Want" on Monday, March 8th at 2pm ET, including a conversation with artist Gita Hashemi following the viewing. This event will be held in Persian.
گیتا هاشمی بیش از سی و پنج سال است در زمینه‌های چیدمان، هنر اجرایی، ویدئو، هنر کامپیوتری و اینترنتی، تلفیق تصویر و متن، خطاطی زنده و نیز در گردآوری و نوشتن در مورد فرهنگ و هنر کار می‌کند. پروژه‌های چند-رسانه‌ای او روی روایت‌های به حاشیه رانده‌شده و تأثیر آن‌ها بر مسائل معاصر تمرکز می‌کنند، و شماری از آن‌ها به تجربه‌ی زنان می‌پردازند. هاشمی تا سال ۲۰۱۰ در دانشگاه‌های یورک و تورنتو در زمینه هنرهای تجسمی، دیجیتال و پژوهش‌های فرهنگی تدریس می‌کرد. بسیاری از کارهایش از سازمان‌ها و شوراهای هنری کانادا پشتیبانی شده‌اند، و جوایز متعددی دریافت کرده‌اند. پروژه خطاطی زنده‌اش با عنوان

Gita Hashemi has been working for over thirty-five years in installation, performance art, digital and net art, text and image, live and embodied writing, and also in curating and publishing. Her multi-platform and transdisciplinary projects focus on marginal narratives and trace their influence in contemporary contexts. Many of her projects foreground women’s narratives. Hashemi taught visual and digital arts and cultural studies at York University and University of Toronto until 2010. Many of her projects have received funding from Canadian art councils and won awards. In 2017, her live-streamed embodied calligraphy project Grounding received the Ontario Association of Art Galleries’ award for the best exhibition of the year. One of her recent projects, Emergent (BarAyandegan) includes a series of audio portraits of women in their own voices, available on different networks. The Woman I Want is part of her larger research-based project Archive Iran: Encounters with a Century. In 2021, Hashemi is an Ontario Heritage Trust’s Doris McCarthy Artist in Residence with her current project Fools in Paradise, and her new project Rumi Roaming will be staged as part of Toronto’s Nuit Blanche. She believes, “the personal is poetic, the poetic is political, the political is personal.”
