John Zamora, an SLLC senior and Rawlings Fellow [2] studying Spanish [3] and Sustainability [4], is featured in the latest edition of The Terp for his work with Hungry Harvest [5]. Hungry Harvest is an organization that collects surplus food from local community-supported agriculture (CSA) operations and distributes them to customers. Will UMD-alumni Even Lutz and Ben Simon, Zamora co-founded the organization to reduce waste, support farms, and offer a service to people interested in locally grown food and provides fresh food to those in need, including individuals, families, local food banks, and soup kitchens.

The team envisions Hungry Harvest to create jobs for people getting back on their feet, to take steps in promoting healthy eating, to continue giving back and to eliminate negative stigmas associated with recovered food.

So far Hungry Harvest has recovered over 60,000 pounds of food and in the next few months, the team plans to move their business from a supplier in Southern Maryland to a warehouse in Central Maryland.

In addition to his studies at SLLC and his work at Hungry Harvest, Zamora has experience in the non-profit sector including working in the Finance Department of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. He also serves as the Agricultural Surplus Coordinator for growingSOUL [6], a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a zero-waste sustainable food system.
