We would like to congratulate Macarena García-Avello, a 3rd year PhD student in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese, for being awarded best dissertation by the University of Oviedo, Spain, where she completed her PhD in Contemporary Literature in 2014. Her dissertation titled, “La crisis postmoderna del sujeto y la representación de voces ex/céntricas en la ficción autobiográfica contemporánea” was one of four projects awarded this prize in Arts and Humanities. It was selected among all the theses defended during the 2013-2014 academic year at the University of Oviedo as one that exemplified an exceptional and unique contribution to the arts and humanities. Her project deals with 20th century autobiographical fiction written by North American women and the representation of postmodern subjectivities. She is currently researching transnational U.S. Latina writers at the University of Maryland.
