French Studies Minor

DESCRIPTION

The 21-credit French Studies Minor provides an overview of the linguistic, cultural, and literary aspects of French.

REQUIREMENTS

All students new to SLLC courses must take the online Foreign Language Placement Test [1] (FLPT) before registering for classes.

Notes:

Students with prior experience in French may satisfy language acquisition requirements by placement in consultation with the undergraduate advisor.
Advanced students may substitute 300- or 400- level electives for FREN 204, FREN 250, or FREN 301 in consultation with the Advisor
Students must take language acquisition courses sequentially, i.e., 103, 203, 204, 250, etc. Once credit has been received in a higher-level language acquisition or grammar course, a lower-level course may not be taken for credit.
Students can satisfy the ARHU Global Engagement Requirement [2] by taking the appropriate French language course sequence (103>203), or by taking a higher level French course.
Starting Jan 2018: FREN 387 will be required as a prerequisite to any 400 level course for the minor.

Notes:

Minors receive credit for FREN 302 *or* FREN 303 but not both.
Minors receive credit for FREN 311 *or* FREN 312 but not both.
For students who participate in Maryland-in-Nice or Maryland-in-Montpellier, FREN 399 counts as one 3 credit upper level elective towards the minor.
All pre-requisites imply "or equivalent knowledge." In cases of equivalent knowledge, required language-focus credits are replaced with the written approval of the Undergraduate Advisor or the Program Director. In order to demonstrate equivalent knowledge, students are required to take the Foreign Language Placement Assessment (FLPA) [1].
Most content courses taught in French are not open to fluent or native speakers of French.
One 400-level course is required for the completion of the minor in French studies.
All courses must be taught in French.
A maximum of 6 credits can be applied to the minor from courses taken at other institutions, with the exception of Maryland in Nice, which allows the transfer of 9 credits.
