SPRING 2017 SCHOLARSHIPS

Roshan Institute Scholarship for Excellence in Persian Studies

Made possible by a generous gift from Roshan Cultural Heritage Institute in 2010, the Roshan Institute Undergraduate Scholarship for Excellence in Persian Studies (RIUS) is an endowed fund to provide scholarships for Persian Studies majors or double-majors at the University of Maryland.
 

Number of Awards

Two scholarships @ $2000.00 each

Eligibility

  • University of Maryland undergraduate student
  • Persian Studies major or double major
  • Overall GPA of 3.25 or higher   
  • Previous recipients are not eligible

Application Materials

  • Cover letter
  • A short essay in English (500 words; 12 pt. font; double spaced; Times New Roman); TOPIC: ‘Explain how Persian Studies has enriched your life and world view?’  
  • One letter of recommendation from a Persian Studies professor
  • Unofficial transcript
  • If any, a list of extracurricular activities related to Persian Studies that you have been engaged in. These can include cultural events and lectures on campus, internships, volunteer work, etc.

Submission Deadline

Complete application packets should be submitted in hard copy format to Ms. S. Ata (JMZ 1220). Application Deadline Date March 27, 2017.

 

The Amouzegar Undergraduate Scholarship in Persian Studies

Established in 2006 by His Excellency Dr. Jamshid Amouzegar, the Ulrike and Jamshid Amouzegar Undergraduate Scholarship in Persian Studies (AMUS) is an endowed fund to provide annual scholarships for freshman or sophomore students who are seeking a double major, major or minor in Persian Studies.
 
Number of Awards
 
Three Scholarships @ $1000.00 each
 
Eligibility
  • University of Maryland undergraduate student
  • Seeking double major, major or minor in Persian Studies 
  • Freshman or sophomore enrolled in a Persian language course (100-, 200-, & 300-level Persian language courses)
  • Both heritage and non-heritage students are eligible
  • Overall GPA: 3.25
  • Native speakers of Persian are ineligible

Application Materials

  • Cover letter
  • A letter of recommendation from the course instructor
  • A 2 to 4 minute video recorded oral statement in Persian (self-introduction, personal interests, reasons for learning Persian, etc.). Video file could be submitted on a DVD, a flash drive, or as a YOUTUBE or VIMEO URL link shared with sata@umd.edu .
  • A writing sample from class assignments (Handwritten; Length: if 100-level: 150 words; if 200-level: 250 words; if 300-level: 350 words)

The Persian Studies Essay Award

Made possible by a generous gift from the Iranian-American philanthropist, Mr. Hossein Amirsaleh, in 2010, The Persian Studies Essay Award is an endowed fund to recognize outstanding undergraduate student essays submitted in partial fulfillment of a Persian Studies course requirements.   

Number of Awards 

Three Scholarships @ $400.00 each

Eligibility

  • University of Maryland undergraduate student
  • Enrolled in a Persian Studies course offered in English
  • Previous recipients of this award are not eligible

Application Materials

  • Cover letter
  • An essay/term paper written in partial fulfillment of a regular Persian studies course requirements offered in English in 2016-2017 academic year
  • Course syllabus containing a description of the essay/term paper requirements OR  a description of the essay/term paper provided by the course instructor or TA

Submission Deadline

Complete application packets should be submitted in hard copy formatt to Ms. S. Ata (JMZ 1220). Application Deadline Date March 27, 2017.
