SLLC Scholarships - deadline April 19th

Donald Hirsch Scholarship 

Established in December 2000 to support scholarships for students studying foreign language who have a long-term vocational desire to apply their language skills to a field such as architecture, law, business, translation, public policy, or government service. 

Number of Awards to be Distributed: 3 awards of $400 each 

Eligibility: 

  • Majors in French, German, and Japanese 

  • Minimum GPA of 3.5 

  • Previous recipients are ineligible 

Application Materials: 

  • Cover letter 

  • Short Essay (600 words; 12 pt. font; double spaced; Times New Roman): What are your long-term career plans? How does your language major fit into these goals?  

  • 1 letter of recommendation from a professor in your major 

  • Unofficial transcript 

Deadline: complete application packets should be uploaded at https://go.umd.edu/2019sllcscholar, no later than FRIDAY, APRIL 19, 2019 by 11:59pm. 

Bartsch-Dunne Language House Scholarship 

Established in 2008 to provide annual need-based scholarships for students from the Metropolitan Washington DC area who have been accepted into the Language House.   

Number of Awards to be Distributed: 4 awards of $1,000  

Eligibility: 

  • Current or admitted Language House Resident

  • Language Major or Minor  

  • Minimum GPA 3.0 

  • Proof of Financial Need 

  • Originally from the Metropolitan Washington DC area (Northern Virginia, DC, Prince George’s, Montgomery, Howard Counties in Maryland) 

  • Previous recipients are ineligible 

Application Materials: 

  • Completed application form with Short Essay (600 words; 12 pt. font; double-spaced, Times New Roman): Describe your interest in languages and your plans for using your knowledge as a citizen of the globalized world. Upload unofficial transcript and proof of financial aid.

  • 1 letter of recommendation from a professor in your language major/minor 

  • 1 letter of recommendation from someone who knows you in a professional or service context
