A warm welcome to our new faculty and lecturers: Dr. Josh Alvizu, Assistant Professor (Germanic Studies), Dr. Muna Husain, Assistant Research Professor (Arabic), Ms. Liu Ying Xue (Ashley), Lecturer (Chinese), Mr. Willi Barthold, Lecturer (German), Ms. Valeria Nardi, Lecturer (Italian), Ms. Ana Claudia Dos Santos Sao Bernardo, Lecturer (Portuguese, Spanish).

New in their positions as Department/Program leaders are Professors Mel Scullen (French & Italian), Julie Koser (Germanic Studies), and Luka Arsenjuk (Film Studies).

This year, three of our colleagues are combining their sabbatical leaves with UMD and off-campus awards. Professors Hester Baer in Germanic Studies (RASA), Valerie Orlando in French (Fulbright), and Ana Patricia Rodriguez in Spanish and Portuguese (RASA). Congratulations to them!

Germanic Studies has been awarded a prestigious grant by the German Embassy in Washington to host one of its campus weeks in celebration of the Bauhaus centennial. Persian Studies has been awarded an $800,000 Mellon Foundation Grant for the creation of a Digital Text-Production Pipeline. Russian has received Maya Brin Cultural Competency Scholarship funds in the form of a $500,000 endowment. This is the second Maya Brin gift to the Russian Department, for which they have exciting ideas.
