Activist & Journalist Masha Gessen named 2015 Maya Brin Resident

The Maya Brin Residency Program is thrilled to announce that they will host Masha Gessen, the prominent Russian-American journalist and LGBT activist, for two weeks in February 2015. Gessen is the author of Words Will Break Cement: The Passion of Pussy Riot and The Man Without a Face: The Unlikely Rise of Vladimir Putin. She recently edited a book called Gay Propaganda: Russian Love Stories and is currently researching a book on the Tsarnaev brothers, the two Chechen brothers involved in the 2013 Boston marathon bombing.

Gessen is a regular contributor to Slate and frequently appears on American TV and radio. Her visit to the School of Languages and Literatures will include a one-day conference on freedom of speech in Russia and a large public lecture. Gessen’s visit will also include a faculty seminar and several events in partnership with the department of Women’s Studies and LGBT Studies.
