The Language House is a very busy place! Residents of the Language House will participate in various cultural, social and academic activities such as:

  • Lectures by faculty, embassy personel and guest lectures

  • Coffee Conversations for informal conversations in one of the languages

Current Events

Open House

DATES for Fall 2017 : TBA:  12n -1:00 p.m. (#0106 St. Mary's Hall)

The purpose of the Open House is to provide you with a chance to tour open facilities and one apartment in the Language House. The event is especially valuable for prospective students and their parents to receive information about the Language House Immersion Program, one of the many living-learning programs at the University of Maryland. Current language clusters existing in the Language House: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Persian, Russian, and Spanish

Coffee Conversations Fall 2017

Starting on Monday,  September 11, every Monday (4:00 to 5:30pm) through November 27, at Ground Floor, St. Mary's Hall

(No Coffee chats on Monday, October 16 and December 4)

Join this weekly activity to practice, improve, or maintain your language skills in an informal, relaxed setting. In order to ensure that you are improving your skills, a native or near- native "facilitator" guides or oversees each Coffee Chat group. The facilitator can also give you vocab or grammar advice to help you better express yourself without interrupting the flow of conversation. Currently, 14 language tables are offered at the Language House Coffee Chats:

  • Arabic
  • ASL
  • Chinese
  • French
  • German
  • Hebrew
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Persian
  • Portuguese
  • Russian
  • Spanish
  • Tagalog

Other languages are featured occasionally during the semester. Call the Language House for more info on these non-weekly Coffee Chats or if you would like to add a language to the line-up.

Overnight Stay in the Language House

This Open House event will take place in the Spring 2018 semester: Date: TBA

Newly admitted UMD Students: If you are a language learner and interested in exploring the special Living, Learning Program known as the Language House please come and be our guest during the Overnight Stay event.  We look forward to hearing from you and welcoming you to the Language House.

Fall  2017 LH Event Around the World FIlm Festival: Monday October 16: 7 - 9 p.m.

The Language House (LH) Around the World Film Festival is a FREE short film presentation.  Written, produced and directed by LH students to reflect their TEN target languages and clutures.  The event will take place at the Hoff Theater (Stamp Student Union building) on Monday, October 16, 2017: 7 - 9 p.m.
Refreshments will be served afterwards in St. Mary's Hall ground floor.

Ice Cream Social

Monday, May 4, 2017 (6:00 to 7:30 pm) in the Multi-Purpose Room, St. Mary's Hall

Cost: FREE

The Ice Cream Social is an award ceremony to recognize students for outstanding performance or volunteerism in the Language House program. The event is especially joyful for graduating seniors. Representatives of the graduating seniors will flash back and talk about their experiences in the Language House Immersion Program, one of the many living-learning programs at the University of Maryland.
