Coffee Conversations Spring 2019

Starting on Monday,  Feb. 4, every Monday (4:00 to 5:30pm) through May 6, at Ground Floor, St. Mary's Hall

(No Coffee chats on Monday, Apr. 1)

Join this weekly activity to practice, improve, or maintain your language skills in an informal, relaxed setting. In order to ensure that you are improving your skills, a native or near- native "facilitator" guides or oversees each Coffee Chat group. The facilitator can also give you vocab or grammar advice to help you better express yourself without interrupting the flow of conversation. Currently, 12 language tables are offered at the Language House Coffee Chats:

  • Arabic
  • Chinese
  • French
  • German
  • Greek
  • Hebrew
  • Italian
  • Japanese
  • Korean
  • Persian
  • Russian
  • Spanish
  • Tagalog

Other languages are featured occasionally during the semester. Call the Language House for more info on these non-weekly Coffee Chats or if you would like to add a language to the line-up.

Spring 2019 LH Events

Talent Show

Monday, April 1

The purpose of this event is for the residents in the Language House Immersion Program to share a part of what they have been learning about the culture of their target language with special guests, who are involved or interested in the Language House. After the dinner, shows in target language prepared by clusters will be presented.

A contest is a part of the Talent Show. Each cluster in the Language House will be competing for prizes in the show. The best three clusters will be picked to receive cash prize and perform in the annual LH Fundraising Gala. Some of our special guests will serve on the judging committee and decide the results of the contest.

Tea on the Terrace

Monday, May 13

Tea on the Terrace is an award ceremony to recognize for outstanding performance or volunteerism in the Language House program. The event is especially joyful for graduating seniors and their parents. Representatives of the graduating seniors will flash back and talk about their experiences in the Language House Immersion Program, one of the many living-learning programs at the University of Maryland.
