, “The New Babylon” is a 1929 historical drama film considered "one of the finest achievements of the Soviet silent period" (Ian Christie). It was written and directed by the celebrated Grigori Kozintsev and Leonid Trauberg, who were influenced by cinematic elements from the director D. W. Griffith and Charlie Chaplin. A love story set during the Franco-Prussian War and 1871 Paris Commune, the film is an extravaganza, visually drawing on French impressionism and contemporary cinematic norms. The music was the first film score written by the young Shostakovich and demonstrates astonishing complexity and precision, inventiveness, humor and wit.,
