This three day event focusing on the French filmmaker Alice Guy-Blanché consists of a series of symposiums and film showings taking place in the Washington, D.C. area.

Ciné-Concert: Films by Alice Guy-Blaché with musical accompaniment by Kim and Kathryn Kluge. Followed by a discussion.

 

 

Born in 1873 in Paris, Alice Guy-Blaché started her career as a secretary in the first French film production company created by Léon Gaumont in 1896. She then became an artistic director and executive producer for Gaumont before directing over 400 films, ranging from short films to full-length color-tinted and sound synchronized features. Alice Guy-Blaché moved to the United States in 1907, becoming the first woman to own and run her own studio, Solax, in Fort Lee, N. J., until 1914. However, her role in film history was completely forgotten until her memoirs were published in 1976 and film professionals such as Martin Scorsese, Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep honored her posthumously during the ceremony of the Directors Guild of America 75th anniversary in 2011.

Organized in conjunction with the National Gallery of Art and La Maison Française at the French Embassy in Washington, this event will combine film screenings and scholarly presentations. The symposium held at the University of Maryland on Friday, November 9th is cosponsored by the Graduate Field Committee in Film Studies, the Graduate School, the School of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, the Center for Literary and Comparative Studies, Honors Humanities, the Department of French and Italian, the Department of English, and the College of Arts and Humanities.
